For the second-generation Leitz Phone, Leica increases the camera resolution.

For the release of the Leitz Phone 2, the imaging giant Leica updated the processing and sensors on its first smartphone and once more simply repackaged a recent Aquos device from Japanese consumer tech company Sharp.

Sharp and Leica once more collaborated on the imaging technology for the top Aquos R7 smartphone, which is only available in Japan. A “Designed by Leica Camera Germany” variation is scheduled for release on November 18 after a short period of time.
The back camera module is a big attraction here; it features a Summicron 19-mm-equiv F1.9 aspherical lens with seven elements and a 47.2-megapixel 1-inch-type CMOS photography sensor, more than double the resolution of the first Leitz phone.

With a 6x digital zoom and specialized image software, mobile photographers may get a genuine Leica look using the company’s Summilux 28, Summilux 35, and Noctilux 50 camera lenses. JPEG or RAW formats are available for saving images.

Other design alternatives include monochromatic black-and-white photos, an analog 35-mm movie film aesthetic, and a more modern cinematic feel. Leica has also added a widget that will provide the best times to take pictures in the soft light of a sunrise or a sunset. Although there is no official statement on video performance, the Sharp model on which it is based supports 8K recording.

6.6-inch Gorilla Glass-topped OLED display with 2,730 x 1,260 resolution and a 12.6-MP selfie camera with phase-detection autofocus and 8x continuous digital zoom are found up front.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 (SM8450) mobile platform, which includes an octa-core CPU, Adreno graphics, 802.11ac/ax Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.2, and a Hexagon AI engine, powers the second-generation Leitz smartphone. It runs Android 12 out of the box and has 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage with an SD extension of up to 1 TB.

Starting the next week, Softbank will be the only retailer offering the Leitz Phone 2 in Japan at the price of JPY 225,360 (about $1,600).
