First flagship phone with a retractable portrait lens is the Phantom X2 Pro

For some time now, there has been discussion of adding a retractable lens to a smartphone’s camera array. Oppo and Xiaomi have both expressed interest in participating. However, the Tecno Phantom X2 Pro with a similar lens appears out of nowhere.

Phantom Mobile is a high-end sub-brand of Tecno, an international tech company with headquarters in Shenzhen and operations in more than 70 countries worldwide, including those in Africa, the Middle East, India, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. As far as we know, North America does not have easy access to its products.
The Phantom X2 series, which consists of the X2 5G and the X2 Pro 5G smartphones, was recently introduced in Dubai. Despite being marketed as the flagship model, the latter is probably more intriguing because it comes with the first retractable portrait lens ever made.

The primary benefit of using such a lens is that consumers can get 2.5x optical zoom in a relatively compact device that is just 8.95 mm thick (0.35 in). With the 50-MP main camera it’s connected with (which sports a 1/1.3-type sensor), users are reportedly able to take portraits “equivalent to professional camera photos” thanks to the F1.49-aperture lens’s 65 mm focal length and 18.9 cm/7.4 in shallow depth of focus. A second 50-MP main camera and a 13-MP wide camera are also included in the rear array.

In order to demonstrate the photographic possibilities of the X2 Pro 5G and to provide advice on the creation of aesthetic filters, the business has drawn on the creative talents of British photographer, publisher, and film director John Rankin Waddell, also known as just Rankin. Both 4K video at up to 60 frames per second and superior computational photos are available onboard.

A 6.8-inch AMOLED display with a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz and support for the DCI-P3 color gamut is located up front and is protected by tough Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. A 32-MP selfie cam is located in the punch hole.

A multi-core GPU and an octa-core processor are both found inside the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 4-nm mobile platform, which is supported by 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage. All-day use is guaranteed by a 5,160 mAh battery, with 45-W fast charging accessible for those who need to charge quickly. The phone has an AI voice assistant named Ella, built-in language translation, and document scanning capabilities. It runs Tecno HiOS 12, an Android 12-based operating system.

There is also an environmentally friendly version of the X2 Pro 5G device that has a microfiber back cover created from recycled ocean debris.

The final device in the line, the X2 5G phone, has a 6.6-inch HD display with a 90-Hz refresh rate, a 64-MP main camera with RGBW image sensor, a 13-MP wide camera, and a 2-MP shooter. It also has 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage.

Although we don’t yet know the price, the Phantom X2 series is anticipated to launch in significant regions by the end of December.
